I think it's perfectly normal what your daughter is going throughis my step daughter went through the same thing. I think that you did the right thing as well but need to be realistic and still be sure to encourage her to be an individual. My personal opinion is that there is no reason to shop at Lesters when like you said she's going to grow out of the clothing so quick anyways. Finding a balance is the best bet, go to the boutiques when she does a great job on a report card or project but not just to pick up a few things for school. Another thing you can do is get the basics from Old Navy but buy one or two unique pieces at Lesters. Show her your interested and shopping can possibly be you twos "thing"!
As far as the feathers, awesome! I used to get string hair wrapping things with my family whenever we would go camping, it's a trend but fun nevertheless.
You seem to be doing a great job!
:)
Best of luck yo the both of you.

I loved your commentary on the mother's dilemma over whether to support or discourage water play toys that mimics a gun. You really could experience firsthand as a mom of a boy that his desires and urge to make any object into a gun is somewhat biological or rather a natural expression of aggression. Play allows children to safely express all kinds of natural feelings in safe ways especially aggression. So as long as the spray gun is not allowed to point in someones face or any other area that is unsafe or intrusive it serves a natural purpose!

Thanks for the props, UWS Hippy Chick Mom! I really appreciate the support and I wish I could say I'm successful at following your example but ah, it's so much different with boys! With YOUNG LADY I never had this problem! Thanks for letting me know I'm on the right track and especially for not bringing those "drench warfare" water guns into the playground!. I wish everyone was like-minded!

NYKC Mom - First off, I loved your commentary. You are hilarious and an excellent writer! Important topic too. Other mommy-bloggers beware.

I'm a like-minded pacifist. But we all know how fun it is to shoot or squirt stuff. I let my daughters use "squirters" or "sprayers." And yes, despite my best efforts, they do at times refer to these as guns. But I am not a fan of the mega, max, drench-warfare type guns in the playground.
